Russian hybrid war in the Balkans: Destabilization would not be possible without Belgrade

While the conflicts in Ukraine are ongoing, Russia, with the support of its ally Serbia, is using hybrid war tactics to create chaos in the Balkans and divert the West’s attention from the existing crisis in Ukraine, Ivana Stradner, an associate at the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies, states in her analysis.

In the analysis, which is part of the first report of the newly launched “Observatory for the Western Balkans” of the American New Lines Institute, she points out that the Kremlin’s goal is to “use the existing ethnic tensions in the region” and potentially escalate them into violence and thereby undermine NATO’s efforts to maintain peace in the region, at the same time placing Russia in a dominant position.
